Infants & Caregivers

Babies!

By-Donation Open Session at The People’s Yoga NE

Time: Tuesdays, 2-3 pm

Location: The People’s Yoga 3014 NE Killingsworth St, Portland, OR 97211, Studio 3

Come learn to see and appreciate what babies are already doing. Babies are learning new skills all the time and the progression of little steps is as important as getting to the big landmarks of sitting, crawling and walking. Learn how to help your baby develop the skills to get into and out of different levels and positions so they can start negotiating the world on their own terms. Get answers to these questions:

  • Are you curious about your baby’s movement development?

  • Do you have questions about how to support your baby as they learn something new?

  • Do you want to know what your baby might do next?

  • Do you want to learn ways to pick up, set down and hold your baby?

  • Are you looking for ideas about how to play with your baby?

Babies! is open to families with babies from newborn to early walking, and multiple caregivers are welcome. We have found this all-ages, one-room schoolhouse format fosters community and a generative learning environment. These group sessions are structured as open exploring time, where certified Infant Developmental Movement Educators (IDMEs) are available to support the infants in their process, & talk to parents and caregivers about any questions that might come up.

This by-donation group class is offered by Babies Project Portland and hosted by The People’s Yoga. I am one of three Infant Developmental Movement Educators facilitating the session, which is led by Babies Project co-founder Amy Matthews.

Planning and expectant parents, as well as adults of all ages, are welcome to come and observe.

One of the many things that new parents are learning is how to hold their baby (and pick them up, set them down, and hand them to someone else). We believe that a baby’s experience of being held and handled in these transitions has a huge impact on their physical and emotional development.

Baby-handling skills are teachable and, when shared with new caregivers, can help them feel more confident and comfortable about being with their baby. The more comfortable a caregiver is when handling a baby, the more safety and comfort the baby can experience. And this supports bonding between caregivers and babies.

Because doulas are in a special position to support parents bonding with their baby in their earliest days as a family, we’d like to support doulas by sharing an IDME (Infant Developmental Movement Education) approach to specific touch and handling skills.

This free 90 minute workshop will offer the basic principles of touch and handling from an IDME perspective, which focuses on supporting a baby’s experience of themselves and of the world from the perspective of their sensory and motor capacities at each stage of their development. We believe that caregivers are constantly making choices for their baby, and that those choices can support or accidentally inhibit a little one’s development.
