Sessions:

You are more than a collection of parts.

‘Soma’ is the Greek word for body. The term somatics was coined by Thomas Hanna in 1967 to describe an emerging field of movement studies, movement education, and bodywork that emphasized inner perception and experience over how movement looks from the outside.

The roots of this approach to the body arguably date back to the early twentieth century. I propose that the field of somatics arose in response to the model that has dominated all aspects of western culture since the Scientific Revolution of the 17th century:  the assertion that anything can best be understood by breaking it down into its constituent parts.

Moved to fill in some of the large and problematic gaps in that pervasive way of thinking, alternative schools of study and praxis sprouted, somatics among them, embracing a more traditionally eastern, and pre-Scientific Revolution notion: the idea that the whole is more than the sum of its parts.

I work with adults one-on-one, using my knowledge and expertise to meet their questions. My intention is to support people in finding more clarity and ease in their movement using my knowledge of developmental movement patterns and the anatomical structures that make up our miraculous bodies.

Clarifying where our structural support is and which patterns we might call on to travel through those structures can offer more comfort and less wear and tear, both in the activities of daily life as well as in any other, more specialized, movement practice. I am a teacher, not a therapist. I cannot create change for another person (and wouldn’t, even if I could). What I can offer are tools and ways into working with oneself.

Infants & Caregivers

Private Infant Developmental Movement Sessions

Sliding Scale Pricing, from $50 to $120

If money is a barrier to access, please reach out.

These are sessions for babies and caregivers that begin with addressing caregivers’ questions about their baby’s movement development. My skill-set is around observing where a baby is in their journey of learning to move, offering information about the baby’s movement experience, and suggesting ways for caregivers to adjust their touch and handling choices.

The purpose of these sessions is not to help the baby meet milestones faster, but to offer more support and comfort for where they currently are in their process. Honoring process over milestones means witnessing and respecting the infant’s readiness and agency over their own movement choices. The caregiver’s readiness is as important as the infant’s and my goal is that our work together supports ease, connectivity, and responsiveness within the family ecosystem.

Age range of babies I work with is newborn up until walking has become their primary mode of locomotion.
